CLOUD COMPUTING.

As organizations continue to realize benefits from cloud computing, there is no question that cloud tools and solutions are here to stay. According to IDG’s 2020 Cloud Computing research  cloud computing trends among technology decision-makers (ITDMs) including their current and future plans when it comes to migrating applications/workloads to the cloud, investments, and business drivers. The results this year show that 81% of organizations have at least one application or a portion of their computing infrastructure in the cloud, which is up from 73% in 2018. See below for some key findings and sample slides on the research.

Findings.

92% of organization’s IT environment is at least somewhat in the cloud today, as only 8% say their total IT environment is all on-premises.

Cloud-first applications may become more prevalent over time – currently 46% of organization’s cloud-based applications were purpose built for the cloud as 54% moved from an on-premises environment.

More than half (55%) of organizations currently use multiple public clouds, with 21% saying they use three or more.

The biggest challenges that ITDMs face when it comes to the ability to take full advantage of their public cloud resources are controlling cloud costs and data privacy/security challenges.

BACKUP & RECOVERY.

Backup has been an essential part of IT infrastructure, but traditional backup technology is no longer able to meet businesses’ evolving demands to drive modernization and digital transformation.

In general, the purpose of a backup and recovery strategy is to protect the company data against loss and quick reconstruction of the data after loss. Typically, backup administration tasks include the following:

  • Planning and testing responses to different kinds of failures
  • Configuring the database environment for backup and recovery
  • Setting up and maintaining a backup schedule
  • Monitoring the backup and recovery environment
  • Troubleshooting backup problems
  • Recovering from data loss if the need arises

As a backup administrator, you may also be asked to;

  • Perform other duties that are related to backup and recovery
  • Data preservation, which involves creating a database copy for long-term storage
  • Data transfers, which involves moving data from one database or one host to another
  • Data loss design and prevention strategies
